Isobel can't keep her mind on her work. All she can think about is Heather. She scans the crowd of people at the marketplace for the hundredth time trying to find sight of her or Irving. She sees neither.

An elderly woman dressed in rags thumps her on the arm. “I said I would like six of these,” she says pushing a handful of carrots toward her.

“So sorry. Yes of course.” Isobel takes the woman's coin.

She has neither seen nor heard from Heather since that awful day when Irving dragged her away. She knows Heather is to be married. She doesn't want to believe it to be true. She has stayed up at night thinking of a plan. Running away together might be their only hope. She must talk to Heather. But how? Even if she does show up at the marketplace today surely she will be with Irving and he will keep strict control of her. She knows where Heather lives but does not dare go for fear of losing her life.

A proper young woman waltzes up to the selling cart. She hands Isobel a piece of paper and then waltzes away. Isobel looks at the fine linen paper and flawless black ink. She can’t read and has no idea of what is written there. Tomas would be no help for he can’t read either. Only nobility and sometimes the wealthy are taught to read. She knows of no one that is such a person—except Heather. Surely this must be from Heather. She flushes with heat. The girl who delivered it was probably her friend Maura.

She must find someone to read the letter to her. But who? Who could she find to read it as well as be able to trust with what may be written there?
